Overview of human body systems and organization
Introduction to the Human Body
The human body is an incredibly complex machine made up of trillions of cells working together.
Levels of Organization
- Cells - The basic unit of life
- Tissues - Groups of similar cells
- Organs - Structures made of different tissues
- Organ Systems - Groups of organs working together
- Organism - The complete living being
Major Body Systems
| System | Main Function | Key Organs |
|---|---|---|
| Circulatory | Transport blood and nutrients | Heart, blood vessels |
| Respiratory | Gas exchange | Lungs, trachea |
| Digestive | Break down food | Stomach, intestines |
| Nervous | Control and coordination | Brain, spinal cord |
| Skeletal | Support and protection | Bones, cartilage |
| Muscular | Movement | Skeletal, smooth, cardiac muscle |
The Cell
Every cell contains:
- Nucleus - Control center with DNA
- Mitochondria - Powerhouse (ATP production)
- Cell membrane - Protective barrier
- Cytoplasm - Gel-like interior
